When framing for an exterior door, does the sole plate get cut out?
I’ve tried searching the internet and even rented a book from the library. The book says to cut it out on interior doors, which is kind of obvious, but do you cut it out on exterior doors too? If so, do you buy some sort of trim to go underneath to keep the rain and snow out, and what would that piece be called? Thanks for any help.
Yes! You cut out everything down to the subfloor. I would install a pre-hung door unit. Pre-hung doors come already hinged in the frame or jamb. They have a threshold and weatherstriping already installed, and the hole for the knob is already bored in the door.
You will need to make your opening 2″ wider than the door width and the height from subfloor to bottom of the header should be 82+1/2″.
So, if you are installing a 3′ wide door the net width between your framing should be 38″. You can buy flashing tape to seal up the sides of the studs and the area of the subfloor prior to installing the door. Then use 100% silicone and make 3-4 heavy beads of silicone for the threshold to sit down in when you set the door in place.
The frame can be ordered in different thicknesses, so if you have a 2″ x 6″ framed wall, be sure to order the frame accordingly. If you prefer to have a deadbolt lock along with the entry knob, order the door (double bored), this way it will have the hole for the deadbolt already bored through the door face and edge.
